its only done on the unix platform because that's what you choose to do it on. i'm sure everybody in this course would be perfectly happy coding on their own preferred os. a version of javac and java is available for all of them, and the java language certainly isn't os dependant.
and for the first two homework assignments, the handin script would say "your assignment has been handed in early for extra credit" or something along that lines. was that yet another handin script error?
