Subject: the web index

I am having difficulty picturing in my mind what a web index is composed of. Is it a collection of URLs for web pages along with extra information like words that appear in the web pages, numbers, and the hyperlinks? For example, one entry in the index would be let's say www.mit.edu, and for this entry, you have the words, the numbers, and the hyperlinks that exist in the webpage.

Do I have the right idea?
