After looking at my code and experimenting for a few hours I can't get its memory usage lower than about 60 MB for the reuter's test file. Which made me wonder: why don't the professors post solutions to homework after it's due? I don't know about other people, but I've never programmed in Java before this class, and C++ last year was easy and didn't teach us anything about optimizing code for speed and memory usage (at least that I recall). So I think seeing the solutions of experienced programmers would help me greatly in learning Java.
