Subject: Re: syntax highlighting

after doing "cp /afs/andrew/usr/pl1a/.emacs ~/.emacs" I then:
- ran "xemacs" w/ xwin activated (all my xwin config is successful, so that's no problem)
- pressed ctrl-x ctrl-f to open a file
- opened a file (e.g. my ~/211hw/hw2/UnionFind.java)
- then the emacs screen broke into 2 windows and the bottom part entitled "(Fundamental)" contains the text:
(1) (initialization/error) An error has occured while loading ~/.emacs

Symbol's function definition is void: transient-mark-mode

To ensure normal operation, you should investigate the cause of the initialization file and remove it. Use the '-debug-init' option to XEmacs to view a complete error backtrace."

- is my problem that /afs/andrew/usr/pl1a/.emacs shouldn't be used w/ XEmacs or __?
